FULL Elfin Photo Editor 1.0 [Portable]: A Must-Have for Photo Lovers

You've got full Android TV inside, which is a nice change from the more common Android-lite and Aptoide store. Which means you've got all the major streaming apps, and the full versions of said apps. Many portable projectors use nerfed versions of many apps, making them far more annoying to use.

On the other hand, if you are going to be using it away from power outlets regularly, the Halo Plus offers a brighter, and generally better, image compared to several other portable projectors we've liked. The Anker Mars II Pro is a better deal, but lacks the contrast, detail, and the ease of use of a full Android TV interface. The BenQ GS50 has a more playful industrial design, but can't compete with the Xgimi on brightness.

The Xgimi Elfin ($599) delivers lots of capability for its size, price, and 2-pound weight, including built-in streaming courtesy of Android TV 10 and a highly watchable image for movies and video. Unlike the similarly priced Anker Nebula Solar Portable, our top pick for a fully portable palmtop or mini projector, it doesn't include a built-in battery. But not using batteries frees it from a design requirement to conserve power, which lets it offer an 800 ANSI lumen brightness rating. That's twice the rating of the Nebula Solar, enough to it make it one of the brightest projectors for its size. It's our new top pick for a non-battery-powered mini projector.

Samsung's recent reentry into projection has borne new fruit in the form of The Freestyle, a truly portable projector that offers a fresh take on what a display device should be able to do. Priced at $899, it looks like a toy, but it's a serious piece of hardware that leverages Samsung's smart TV platform and even its calibration tools to create something that feels new. Oh, and in addition to acting as a projector, it's a full-fledged smart speaker, as well as a colorful and programmable ambient light source. In other words, it's refreshingly fun!

You can also control the projector from the Samsung SmartThings app, including using one of the more interesting features of this projector: cellphone-based auto-calibration. Beyond auto-calibration, this projector has the full grayscale and gamma calibration controls found on Samsung's better TVs, including two-point, 10-point, and 20-point adjustments, as well as separate CMS controls. It's entirely possible to calibrate this projector to a high degree of accuracy if you wanted to use it as a portable monitor or otherwise enjoy accurate color out of it. And this is on top of the fact that the picture looks good, albeit not necessarily accurate, right out of the box.

When it comes to getting your kids to look at the camera, capturing everyone smiling at the same time, or snapping a photo in a busy street without passersby ruining the shot, timing and quick reflexes are half the battle. Thankfully, the Zoom has a range of modes to help make sure you get the photo you want, no matter what obstacles stand in your way.

I shot this hand-held, and my iPhone 12 Pro Max just grabbed a photo that looked exactly as it did to my eye. Film would never have caught all the highlights and shadows, and on Velvia 50 with a $1,800 24mm f/1.4 lens on my Nikon or on my Canon I'd have to expose for 1/4 of a second at f/1.4. No 24/1.4 lens is stabilized, so 1/4 is pushing it, and on full-frame I'd not have the huge depth-of-field I enjoy on iPhone.
